Description: In this lesson, students will learn to summarize poems, identify their theme, and identify the narrator’s point of view (first or third person).

 


Notes for Educators

Read a poem together. *Include piece about summarizing and retelling what happened in the poem

 

Discuss with students:

  • Who is telling the story? What kind of person might it be? Is this poem written in first or third person? How does that impact the story?
  • How did the poem make you feel? What in the poem made you think that?
  • What does the author feel about storms? What in the poem makes you think that? 
  • Why do you think the author wrote this poem? What is the theme of this poem?

Have students respond to concluding question, “Do you think the title is a good title for this poem?” Ask student to use evidence from the poem to support their answer.
