Lesson Description

Description: Students learn that punctuation helps readers read their sentences and ideas properly.

Teaching Point: "Today I will show you that punctuation helps your readers get even more out of your stories."

Suggested Instructional Time:

Getting Ready: Sample teacher story for a hook. Select some student work to use as group problem solving.

Teacher Tips:

Connection: Create a story where you had left writing laying around. Tell the very short story. But then explain someone else tried to read it. Model how they sounded like a robot when they read it.

Teaching Point: "Today I will show you that punctuation helps your readers get even more out of your stories."

Teaching: Use this to show the importance of punctuation. Show the story without punctuation and model how students can read it aloud to hear where punctuation should go. Model as much as your students need and rememeber the importance of making mistakes for all to see.

Active Engagement: Now have students help read another part aloud and give suggestions for editing. Possible include incorrect punctuation. Be sure not to leave out capitals too- including capitalizing names. This standard will be taught in a later unit, but students should be introduced to it now.

Link: Have students read to their partner and find places to change or edit punctuation. Celebrate what they discovered.

Considerations for Differentiation: Following this mini lesson, release students to begin their workshop time. Students should be independently writing. The teacher should use this time for small group work or conferring with individual students.

Comments/Questions to help:

-read this part out loud. Did you take a breath? Can your eyes see where the break is coming? Periods and Capitals give us those clues like road signs.

-maybe with small groups, work on dramatic and fluent reading with a level that suits them to hear and see good writing technique.

-students could also use the checklist today to look all over their writing

-worksheet with sentence/non sentence examples if students need to review
