Description

Students will learn/review basic mapping skills to help them analyze maps representing various historical data.

Learning Targets

Students will:
Describe the migration of Native Americans to Missouri prior to European Settlement and throughout US History.
Draw information from multiple sources in response to a compelling question.
Construct and interpret current and historical maps, graphs, and other representations.
Describe the role of financial institutions in an economy.
Generate questions about individuals and groups who have shaped significant historical changes and continuities.
Locate and describe places using absolute and relative location.
Use geography to interpret the past and predict future consequences as appropriate to topics (catastrophic events in one place affect people living in other places, what would happen if population of a city increased dramatically).

Teaching

Activity 1:Need to write lesson template that shares standard outcomes and intent.
First, complete the turtorial on Sheppard Software as a class. Then, students can individally play the other levels on Sheppard Software to review basic mapping skills.

Continue with basic mapping practice by using the Native American Settlement & Migration Maps slides resource. Review the discussion questions with the class as you read each map.

Activity 2:
Next, students will engage in a lesson on Active Classroom where they will read maps related to early Europeans exploring the New World. (Age of Exploration Maps in resources).

There are lots of resources in this lesson. Feel free to use them as needed but they are not used explicitly in the above lesson.

For standard: Use geography to interpret the past and predict future consequences as appropriate to topics (catastrophic events in one place affect people living in other places, what would happen if population of a city increased dramatically): catastrophic events: Interactions-- Diseases decimating populations. geography to interpret the past and predict future… Could look at maps from AC of where explorers from different countries were going, relate to language and cultures in those places today.

MAPPING WILL NEED TO BE DISPERSED THROUGH THE PLANS THEMATICALLY. (ie where NA already were, where the explorers from different countries were landing, and columbian exchange)

1. Use Mizzou "Seven Tribes of Missouri" resource (https://peacestudies.missouri.edu/di/tribes) to discuss the preservation and loss of Native American tribes in Missouri. (Link doesn't work anymore - maybe someone downloaded this resource?)

Guiding Questions:
-Why are there no federally recognized tribes in Missouri today?
-How is the example of Missouri reflective of Native American history as a whole?
-How does this example relate to power, progress, and the age of exploration?
